Where is the best place to rent a house in Outer Banks?

A bunch of friends and myself are looking to rent a house for a week in Outer Banks, NC next summer (8/2011) and I am wondering what part would be the best to look at renting a house in. I see all the different areas on the rentals websites, but am looking for opinions on the best areas for a group of people in...

Hatterasjack

OK here's the real deal. There are two Outer Banks. One north of Oregon Inlet (Nags Head, KDH, Kitty Hawk, Southern Shores, Duck and Corolla) and one South of the inlet (Hatteras Island - Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village. A third OBX would be Ocracoke. So it depends on what you're looking for. In the summer the Northern Banks are rather hectic; lots of tourists, lots of shopping. It's more like being back home. The Southern OBX are more laid back, relaxed and in general more pleasant. If you're looking to get away to the beach Hatteras Island is really it. Forget about Nags Head if you want some real salt air to breathe. Hey Rodanthe (Nights In Rodanthe) is 15 miles off the NC mainland! For a real getaway consider Ocracoke - retreat of Blackbeard the pirate. Really laid back. Almost like Key West North. Not much to do but 'beach it'. There are some bars and restaurants of note like Howard's Pub. You pick it. You can't go wrong.
