Because the banks did not assume risky policies as happened in the US. Also regulations in Canada are tougher. However I would never entrust Canada in the hands of Harper. The sooner he's gone, the better.

However, the reason they didnt collapse is because its elected officials didnt cause an uproar saying it wasnt for "fair" for blacks who couldnt afford houses. Now they bought houses they couldnt afford and we are in this mess.
