There are many paths one can take in Banking and Finance and being a teller is one way to get started. You could also get started in the Customer Service Call Center or the "proof" department.

One way to be successful at finding a teller position is to apply online with a bank. Banks are usually looking for people with cash handling, computer, and customer service experience. A temporary service may also be helpful to you in getting a teller position.

Be sure to check your local want ads and websites like Monster, CareerBuilder, etc. for openings.

Most bank tellers require cash experience and prior customer service experience, and a high school diploma. If you don't have prior customer service or cash experience, you will probably have to start as a cashier somewhere so you can gain experience. Once you have at least a year's experience, you can apply for bank teller and if you get hired, you should be able to move up from there.

Most, if not all banks require applying online. You don't have to have cash handling experience or a college degree. A brief screening and background check will be required along with your high school or GED diploma.

Talk to the assistant manager of a few banks to learn more about the job. Then apply online with their names as a referral if they give permission. That way the Hiring Manager will pull your name from the web site. Good luck!
