Good/cheap hotels in Topsail Beach, NC or Outer Banks, NC?

I'm planning a mid-May (2013) vacation for me and my friends to celebrate the end of our college careers. We're looking to go to Carolina Beach, NC; Topsail Beach, NC; Outer Banks, NC; or Wilmington Beach, NC. Has anyone been to these destinations that can give me good insight on where to stay?

Topsails beach has quite a few nice places to stay. I stayed at Shell island resort. Nice place. Kayak.com has a good list of places to stay and a maps of where they are located. I liked the Wrightsville beach area.
