It would be more convenient for you to switch banks (because your CA credit union is not likely to have a branch in TX), but most banks don't offer interest on your checking account like a credit union does.

I strongly urge you NOT to go with Bank of America. They screwed my husband and me over!

If you are content with your credit union, check with them first. see if they recommend anyone in Texas. Then shop around before you transfer your money.
Also consider spliiting putting part of your money in a bank, and another in an IRA, or another credit union.
This way if one doesn't work out your not stuck there.
plus, if you start with an IRA now, you really will build up your financial future.

you don't have to switch from your credit union if you don't want to. Check with your credit union to see if they belong to a shared branch network. If so, find out if there is a shared branch near where you're moving. Most Credit Unions have online banking, direct deposit, debit cards, etc, so there's no need to change if you don't want to.

I would switch to a large bank that is going from small regional to mega regional or national scope. I happen to be with Chase which is similar to Bk of A. I think these and Wachovia and Wells Fargo are going to be the banks for people who are in your situation as I understand it.
