Digging on the creek bank and saw different colors what do they mean? (i was expecting color change)?

When i was digging on the bank of my local creek, while i was digging, i noticed the dirt changing colors (as expected), the top was a brown ish color 3 inches under that a orange color, grey, blackish color, blue, more grey The blackish layer was 5feet under the normal ground it was around >1 deep, Blue layer...

Since you were on a creek bank it is safe to assume that the area has long been under formation by water deposition. Fires, floods, drought etc upstream from this location would contribute different colored strata based on the predominant residue of the event.
