All of the money (about $650) was drained from my savings account, and the memo says "RI WRIT" (I live in Rhode Island) what the heck is this??? I was never notified of any writ??? I am 18 and I don't pay taxes or anything like that, so I can't be in any debt...what's going on...

Someone took you to court and sued you. You didn't show up. They got a judgment against you.

Check with the bank and find out who seized your bank account. Then check with the courthouse where the judgment was granted.

Looks like someone took you to court and won a judgment, to allow a writ of garnishment. Contact the bank to get the name of the party that has the judgment/writ of garnishment. Do you have any unpaid parking or speeding tickets by any chance? In this case, the state government does not have to take you to court.

Assuming that you're not a reckless 18 year old who has already gotten into debt and defaulted, then you should check to see if you've been a victim identity theft. If you have, odds are one of your relatives did it. Pull your credit report to check for accounts that you did not open...Look for any judgments in the public records section.

You can get a free credit report at http://www.annualcreditreport.com - This is the real free site to get your credit report once a year without a credit card.

A writ means there was a legal judgment against you. Do you owe anyone any money? Were you supposed to pay a bill that you ignored? Do you have unpaid student loans? There is also the slight possibility of identity theft -- or just a plain and simple mistake.

The bank should be able to explain this to you. Have you tried contacting them?

Call the bank and ask them and I would do that immediately.

Even if you were in debt... it takes a judgment and a garnishment order before somebody can just take money from your bank accounts.

Don't wait.... if this is fraud then you have the responsibility to immediately notify the bank that you did not authorize this transaction.

Just call the 1-800 number on the back of your check card and talk to a representative.

?

There is a judgment against you. Ask the Bank to give you a copy of the writ
