Labs are free in much of the midwest. If you would be willing to travel to pick one up, you could find one for free.

Look online for a shelter. We got our black lab mix from a shelter in the area. She actually came all the way to MA From georgia. It was only $350. and that's only the adoption fee. no other charges. the dogs come up to date on shots, they have to have clean bill of health to travel, and it's a nice way to give a needy dog a good home. usually a shelter will take care of the traveling price after you pay the adoption fee. The rescue we went thru had over 100 dogs that needed good homes. Theres plenty of rescues out there so im sure you can find a nice one in the area to help you find your chocolate lab. I receommend finding a shelter that have dogs in foster homes instead of a "pound". they come healthier and happier.

GOod luck!

The last thing that puppies are is cheap.

I think you might do a lot better by adopting a dog. That way, you'll have plenty of money saved up to spend on what the dog needs.

Puppies are not cheap. like they say... if you can't afford the dog itself how can you afford to care for it.
