I think this is more of the answer you were looking for......

Well, having been in your position before, everyone who responded is correct. However where I live if you write a check at Winn Dixie they take forever to cash it out. But please don't go to WAL-MART it takes them less than a day or two because they have the electronic check thing. Ask around I am sure you have a friend or two who has been strapped like you before, trust me, they know what stores that are slow on cashing your check out. Hell find somebody with food stamps and see if they will hook you up with $25 or $35 worth of food. "Closed Mouth Don't Get Fed"

First of all, it's technically illegal to write a check knowing you don't have the money to cover it.
Also, it's highly likely that the check would be deposited by the store before 3-4 days...most likely it would go through your account tomorrow.
Then, you will incur a fee by the bank most likely and by the store...
I once wrote a check years ago for my cable bill. I was short 87 cents and it ended up costing me $40.87 by the time they both charged me for insufficient funds!
Besides that, if the money you expect in a few days is a personal check written by someone else, it won't clear that day anyway...my bank takes about 4 days to clear personal checks.

20 or 30 years ago this may not have been to big a problem, but banks today use the Internet to communicate with each other, A bounced check can be more costly than what you originally paid for the item, for example, lets say you purchased $50.00 worth of food and the check bounced you would have to pay the merchant the $50.00 plus about a $30.00 dollar returned check fee plus about $30.00 to your bank, total of $50.00 worth of food
now cost you a $110.00. It is also illegal to do it. and the merchant can take out a summons for your arrest.

it is illegal to write a check knowing your have insufficient funds - however if you are sure that your will have cleared funds in time then you could take a chance - do you have an agreed overdraft with your bank? Remember checks clear quicker if you bank with the same bank as the shop.

First off, some people have no idea how it feels to be broke. I mean broke, broke with maybe $.60 cents to your name. I have been a single mother, a full time student, while trying to start an independent contracting business. When it comes to food and feeding yourself or your family,SCREW THE RULES!!! Second, if a business takes a check in the evening (best time to do this) then it wont be deposited until the next business day if it is the same bank. If different banks, it is usually longer. Another thing is deposits made from big businesses such as grocery stores usually don't make deposits on there own. They usually have an armored service drop and pick up. So a check that is processed like normal from a person to a business such as Winn DIxie will take about 2 days minimum. Another thing, if your bank takes the check, than you won't have to pay an bounced check fee from the store because the check didn't bounce. Bank of America usually lets up to -$300.00 to go through in bills/ checks. It won't let you use my debit card or cash a personal checks but it will take bills. It is worth an extra $100 to keep my lights on, my internet (need for school and work) on, and to keep my child from starving. I might have to pay a little extra but its the same thing when you finance a car or buy a house without all the money paid out right. It keeps me from having to pay late fees, disconnection fees, and having to pay more deposits. Is it the way to live? No. Should it be done as a primary means of paying bills? No. But sometimes S**t happens. Budget..Budget..Budget is the answer. Now as far as the legal consequences, the statement above is a little dramatic....I know..About five years ago,I went to Publix and cashed a personal check for $50. Publix lets you cash personal checks for up to $50 and only from the person cashing the check. Meaning I can't write a check to my boyfriend and he take it to Publix to cash. I had Wachovia then :-(....The check bounced after it took three days to hit the bank. Now some companies will redeposit the check 3-4 more times before they charge you a bounced check fee. That sucks because Wachovia will charge you a $35 OD fee everytime. Bank of America will usually just take the check if you do not go weeks without funds in your account and always pay the fees accrued by your bank account. Once Publix decides your check is not good, they will mail you a letter that states your check bounced and will charge you the amount for the check and the fee. You won't be able to cash any checks or use checks for food until you are in good standing with them. After one letter is sent, another one 30 days later will be sent asking you to pay the debt. They might even send you another letter asking a third time. That is 3 months/90 day time frame to pay back what you owe. If you don't, then your an idiot an you deserve to go to jail. If you don't respond or pay back your debt, Publix (is one of the few that will take you to court to get their money no matter if it's only $25) will press charges against you for misdemeanor check fraud giving you a court date. During that time, you still can go to the Publix and pay the fees you owe and everything will be dropped. If you happen to make it all the way to the hearing, you will be given a date that the fees owed to Publix have to be paid by and of course now you have $100-200 in court costs. Do people go through all that? All the time....In reality, we charge credit cards when we don't have the money, we finance cars and houses when we don't have the money but we get critical when someone asks about a small check for food. Fortunately, I am not as strapped for money but while I was in school getting my AA, AS, and BAS Degrees I was strapped for money and had to wait to get through the 3rd-4th week of each semester before I received my financial aid check. Plain and simple, when it comes to providing food, shelter, and electric for yourself or your family you do what you have to! I paid the money to Publix the day after I got the letter and was able to cash checks with them right after.....

It's illegal, and most stores are set up with a service that automatically deducts the money from your account right then - no money = no sale. They will decline your check.

You would be dating the cheque for today's date and if the grocery store cashes it tonite, you are assuming that the cheque wont be cashed before you can get the money in and if your account is empty, it will be NSF...so I say "no don't do it"
