Things were cheaper back then, even back just ten years ago.

Note that I don't know any specifics so I'm just going with what I know.

Airlines didn't charge fat fees (fees for fliers who are a little heavier than normal) for two reasons: 1, fuel was cheaper so it didn't matter how much they used, and 2, there were less fat people back then (back then being the 1970's or so; again, I'm just going with the airline fees that I know exist. At least... I think they do).

I don't know about the banks though. Maybe banking has become more expensive over time since lots more people use banks nowadays.
