Why do I have to pay Chase Bank when I use my credit card at Macy's?

Macy's provides me with the goods, Macy's is paid by its bank that gave it its merchant account. If Chase does not pay Macy's why do I get a bill from Chase? Also, Chase sells the account to the Chase Issuance Trust and gets the full value of the debt.
