What is the minimum amount of money needed in your bank account for a short stay visa to France?

I'm staying for 60 days with a french national, so there are no lodging/hotel expenses.. will they take this into account? I saw in the UK french embassy site that I will need 65 euros per day.. is this true all across the board even if i'm only likely to spend 25 euros a day at most?

Without lodging/hotel expenses you need to show availability of funds of €32.50 per day of stay.

I quote the EU Visa Handbook, Annex 18 - Reference amounts required for the crossing of the external border fixed by national authorities

The reference amount for adequate means of subsistence for the planned duration of an alien's stay or for his transit via France to a destination in a third State is equal to the amount of the guaranteed minimum wage in France (SMIC) calculated daily on the basis of the rate fixed on 1 January of the current year.

This amount is regularly reassessed on the basis of the French cost of living index:

– automatically whenever the retail price index rises more than 2 %,
– by a government decision - after consultation with the national commission for collective bargaining - to grant a rise higher than the rise in the retail price index.

As of 1 January 2012, the daily amount of the SMIC (minimum wage) is EUR 65,00.

Persons holding proof of accommodation (attestation d'accueil) must possess a minimum amount of money, equivalent to half the SMIC, in order to stay in France. This amount is therefore EUR 32,50 per day.
