I have accounts with the ARAB bank, BMCI and BMCE.
The BMCI have given me a debit card so I can use it at ATMs. This account is in dirhams.I pay an insurance fee of 60 dirhams a month against fraud etc, plus normal account keeping fees.
Neither of the other banks will do this as the accounts are in foreign currency. This is a must if you want to transfer money out of Morocco. You can not send the Dirhams out of the country, unless you convert them into foreign currency first.
I did have an account with Bank Populaire, but I found many problems and it was almost impossible to close the account, they keep on billing me for costs which grew each month.
A cheque account costs almost 20 dirhams per cheque and all banks will provide you with that facility.
Think carefully about transferring all your savings here.
The world is in financial crisis and Morocco is no exception. If there were a run on the banks here, who knows what might happen.
Rather invest money in roll-over fixed term deposit in your country of origin and watch it grow as you enjoy Morocco.

In Morocco, telephone, atm and online banking are not developed. Much of the transactions are done in person. So, my only criterion is a bank that has a clear path where customers stand in line bordered by these poles on each side. Otherwise it's the chaos and making a deposit can turn into a stressful experience.

As to the products and services, a free checking account doesn't exist. Banking and transaction fees are still high and hidden. It's common for a bank not to disclose these fees and to just say that they simply don't have literature or information about that. For instance if you are in another city and want to make a deposit into your account and you go to another branch (of your own bank), you pay a fee. If you make a cash deposit in your account in your own branch, you pay a tiny tax every time (societe generale).

If you are transferring foreign currency, you need to open a 'compte en dirhams convertible" so you can withdraw it in foreign currency if you need to.

All banks are inherently evil and never lose money, only the customer does.

BMCE Bank is one of the best banks to open an account with, but there are several to choose from. BMCE doesn’t have fees for opening and maintaining accounts. When choosing a bank, make sure you pick a branch that is the most convenient to your daily life. Will you spend most of your time at work across town from where you live, and need to do your banking during your lunch break? Open the account at a branch closer to work. If not, open one in your neighborhood. There is a reason for selecting a bank location; you can only bank at the branch office you open your account at. You can’t make deposits, withdrawals, get account documents or make changes unless it’s at that specific branch. You can get an ATM Visa Debit Card, so you’ll be able to use it all over Morocco and at other bank ATM’s for fee, usually 6 DH. BMCE has many bank branches, especially in the larger cities so it’s also beneficial for avoiding ATM fees. Other national banks with a lot of branches are Attijariwafa, BMCI, Groupe Banque Populaire, and Wafa Bank. The best thing to do is visit a couple of banks that have convenient locations and check their account fees to make a decision that’s best for you.
