What are important things I should look at and consider when choosing a bank?

I am getting ready to go off to college and don't have a bank acount. I don't have a lot of money and really don't want a credit card. I would like a debit card or check card. I have no idea what I'm looking for and I don't want to make the wrong decision.

It depends on which college you end up going to. If you're going to live on campus, you will most likely need a place on campus to withdraw money and make deposits. My college has a partnership with a bank, so I can easily use a debit card and have a place to deposit money on campus. Actually you should want a credit card vs. a debit card......there are pissy little charges that go w/ debit cards and you don't have the protection that a credit card has.....

Get a basic free account (no min balance requirements; no monthly service fees; and NO FEES to actually talk to a teller) you'd be surprised at the crazy fees.....

Go for a credit union!!!!
