Head straight south on I-77 to Charleston WV.
At Charleston, get on I-64, which takes you all the way to
Norfolk VA. I-64 passes Charlottesville and Richmond.
In Norfolk, take Route 168 to Currituck NC.
From there US 158 takes you straight to the Banks.
Total Distance: 737 miles

Non-shortcut: When you get to Lexington VA, head over to Buena Vista VA and take the Blue Ridge Parkway north to I-64.
It adds 13 miles, but it's worth it.

Get on I-80 East to I-79 South to I-70 south to Rt 40 east to 522 south to 17 south to I-95 South and follow through to exit for the Outer Banks. Look up Rand Mcnally's website and get directions from there. You can plan a road trip and add stops and stuff in between your start point and destination. Happy Driving!!!

Fly from Hopkins airport to Norfolk, then rent a car. :)

The best driving route is the one listed in Yahoo (according to my inlaws, who have driven from Cleveland to the outer banks every summer for years), where you take the turnpikes to I-70, go to the edge of the Beltway in DC, south to Richmond, southeast to Norfolk, and onward from there (some of the other entries may be more scenic, but not as fast). Have fun.
