My wife and I have just been made aware that our local Post Office is shutting down and I find myself in rather a difficult position. I currently use the Post Office card account however this will no longer be relevant to my needs once the Post Office closes down. My wife has stated that I'd be better with...

It really depends where you live, you say your not very mobile so go for a high street bank that you can get to easily if there are ever any problems with your account. You could always discuss your options with the bank on what account would suit your needs best, once you decide on your bank. Try a bank or building society like Abbey or Halifax, as you tend to find these in most high streets, book an appointment to dicuss which accounts they have on offer and get your information and leaflets to help, alternatively you could look on one on their websites and see what accounts they have on offer. I have a visa electron account, which is just a basic account where your money gets paid in and you can draw out money at any cash machine, you don't get an overdraft unless you ask for one but you can't use this account in all shops or on the internet, not every place accepts them.

Not all cash machines are free though, so be careful which ones you use. Good luck x

There are many to choose from Alfred, in your position I would suggest that you find which Bank has the nearest and most accessible Bank Machine, so you don't have to walk miles....I presume you are not Rockerfella, so it wont really concern you about the current account interest rate....but if you have some money, some current accounts (with cheque book and debit card) can be linked to a deposit account, one feeds the other, a min. amount is kept in the current account and the remainder is kept in the deposit account receiving higher interest. When you get the card you will receive a Pin number......this can be hard to remember,.....but when you first use it you are given the chance to change it to a number you can more easily remember....best of luck.
It makes a nice change for a question to be well written, so you can understand what is being asked.....good on you.
All the best.

I'd suggest the Nationwide Building Society. You can get everything from them that you can get from a High Street Bank. But the big advantage is they are not a bank with shareholders to placate, so you get better rates etc. They also have an account which pays an attractive rate of interest if you pay your pension in to it. Have a look at their website - http://www.nationwide.co.uk/default.htm - or look at any of the comparison sites, eg. www.moneyfacts.co.uk or www.moneysupermarket.co.uk. Best of luck.

Maybe a telephone/internet account would be better for you, as you can run it from home, if you are not too mobile.

Try Alliance and Leicester. But beware with cash point machines some still charge a fee, mostly if they are in newsagents and petrol forecourts.

Depends where you live. I used to live in Scotland, so a Bank of Scotland account was fine (branches everywhere) however now I live in London, and there are very few branches of BOS, so I've changed my account to a local one. Works for me.
