US student opening a bank account in Denmark?

Share |

I'm studying abroad in Denmark, and so far I've survived on cash that I brought from home and I think it's time to open a bank account. But I also have to go on study tours with my program that will take me places like Estonia and Sweden, both of which use different currencies than Denmark. I know that...

I would go speak to all the larger banks, some of these will have departments in the countries you mention and drawing money from the same bank should be cheaper. Get a VISA/Dankort while you are at it. It's a very practical card to have.

When I travel, I usually exchange some cash before I go and take it with me, and otherwise use my VISA to pay for hotels, restaurants etc. Because of the withdrawal fees, the only time I would use my VISA to draw cash would be in case on an emergency.

I would suggest using either Danske Bank or Nordea Bank.

The best card for you would be a "Visa Dankort". Don't get a Mastercard.

When you are going on study tours outside of Denmark, it is a good idea to bring the correct currency, and not just use your card. The best places to get the currency, is at the Forex shops. They always have good exchange rates (meaning that it is honest), and the commission is cheaper than in the banks.
