Switching to another bank.....?

Share |

I was thinking of closing my WaMu checking account and open up a new one at Bank of America (I heard that BofA has this whole "keep the change" and the "mobile banking" business). Only thing is, my WaMu credit card is still active. Does my credit card have anything to do with my checking account since they are...

Usually no. The credit card is just a product offered by WaMu so you closing your account should have no effect on the credit card. I would leave the account open for just a while though so that any thing outstanding has time to clear or go though.

The keep the change rules are here: http://www.bankofamerica.com/deposits/ch...

The Mobile Banking details are listed here: http://www.bankofamerica.com/associateba...

Be aware that BoA is not the only bank that offers Mobile Banking check around to see who else does (my bank USAA has offered it for almost 3 years now).

Good Luck

No - unless you have set up a direct pay situation of some sort where your credit card bill gets automatically gets paid out of your WaMu checking account each month, then there should be no connection that I can think of.

In order to switch banks, first thing you need to do is STOP all automatic payments just as I mentioned above. Open the new checking account simultaneously and switch all automatic payments (and any paychecks going in as well) to the new account.

Second thing you want to do is keep the WaMu account open and funded to the proper amount so that any outstanding checks or debits clear. I'd wait a month at least.

Finally, once you're sure nothing else will come from or go into the WaMu account...close that sucker and get the rest into your new B of A account. Then you should be done.

If the WaMu credit card is really a credit card and not a debit card, then you shouldn't have any trouble moving your checking account. If the credit card is linked to your checking account for overdraft protection, you would have to apply for a new credit card or line of credit with BofA to continue to have that protection.

I would guess that WaMu offers online banking and you could use that to set up an automatic transfer from your checking to savings account every week if you want to save money. I'm not sure what the "mobile banking" is that you're talking about so I can't really comment on it.

You could also contact WaMu about your credit card just to make sure you won't be losing any benefits by closing your checking account. Some banks will waive fees on other accounts because you have a checking account with them. You'd have to ask them about it to be sure.

Good luck.

You can always go to Bank of America and ask them, I just started an account with them and they were very helpful.
