Does anyone know if Sir Joseph Banks thought the "terra australis incognita' existed? What was his opinion?

Banks was appointed as the official Royal Society botanist on HMS Endeavour,the ship commanded by Captain Cook that was sent to confirm the existence (or otherwise) of Australia;it's extremely unlikely he would have been appointed,or wanted to go,if he didn't believe Australia existed in the first place.

Probably. There had been rumours that Australia existed at least 2 centuries before hand.
