Unless you go to a check cashing place and pay a fee (which you may not be able to do since you only have a photo id - not sure on this) you have to cash it "against" funds in an existing account, or deposit the check, wait for it to clear, then withdraw funds. If you open a savings account, this is the way it will go down. The benefit to opening an account (among other benefits) is that you can have your employer make what's called a direct deposit to that account on your payday - no need to go to the bank to deposit the check, wait for it to clear and then withdraw funds!

As a work-around, if you want / need the funds NOW, ask your granny (or Mom) if it's OK if you endorse the check over to her and have her cash it against her own account. She will need to have at least that amount in her own account or else she'll have to deposit it, wait, withdraw. To endorse the check to her, turn over the check and write: Pay to the order of (her name as it appears on her account).

I highly recommend opening your own account. You can do this with some or all of the cash you receive if someone else cashes the check for you (cash deposits are immediately available for withdrawal) or you can deposit your own check and wait for it to clear. Then talk to your manager about setting up direct deposit. You will need the routing number and account number to provide to your employer (be sure to get these numbers from the bank if it's a savings account). If it's a checking account, usually giving your employer a deposit slip will cover it. Be aware that in most states you can't have a checking account if you're under the age of 18 - the age at which you are legally able to enter into a contract.

Good luck - and congrats on having a job at 16!

Go with the flow

It can be any adult.
Never cash checks. Deposit them. Wait for them to clear. Then, you can use the money.
(I have never, in my life, cashed a check).
----
Ask an adult to take you to walmart to cash the check.
There may be a fee of about $8 to do this.

Sorry, thought you might want a checking account at age 16.
This allows you to have a debit card in your name that you can use anywhere.
(even online).
You can deposit your check, wait for it to clear (about 2 days) then use the funds.
Save all those NASTY check cashing fees.
