I have collected a cheque book from State Bank of India at Chennai. Without any information they charged me Rs. 75/- for 25 leafs cheque book. How can we say that they are doing more service to the public. They is no way we can blame the private banks. Most of the private banks are charging Rs. 25/- only.

Most of the customers have the problem with service. This is because prior to privatisation these banks faced no competition. So the employees are lethargic and behave as if they are favouring the customers by giving them services (My mom works in nationalised bank too and these are her findings !!!!!!!). However sir, the main area which seperates the privates and nationalised banks are the reach to grass root levels. Nationalised banks have reached to the grass root level and have provided finance and banking facilities. Priority sector has been recognised and 40% of bank finance is directed to this sectors through various schemes. Also the other charges charged by these peole are very less than private bank. Secondly sir the nationalised banks are not only driven by profit motive but have also given due stress on balanced economic development. You will find that ICICI will cater to the a person sitting in his luxuorious office by providing him prompt service in seconds but they wont reach remote villages and help the farmer who cant have two square meals a day. Nor will they provide loan to the panwala or sabjiwala. But nationalised banks have done that. They have also adopted villages for their development. Sir, i totally agree that the nationalised bank are providing terrible service and should improve their service quality but one must also consider the duties they are doing towards the people of india. Public is not 10 or 20% community which has good financial backing. Nationalised banks have been catering to the masses and not to the classes which is a major difference. There are doing this for 25 or more years. It would be totally unfair to say that they are not servicing the public.
