Also are you sure of those dates? Here is the Social Security death index to check birth and death - there are a zillion Smiths of course. https://familysearch.org/search/collecti...

It may take some time to build on this. www.familysearch.org is a great free resource. The DATES on the social security death index are consistent with what you have. Interesting that the birth date matches the entry Unicorn found..however I pulled up that specific birth cert, and it is for a black female. The gender is debatable on the cert, race is not.
I was unable to locate another birth record with the name you have and that date. The Texas records on familysearch are better than most. You can locate original birth certificates for this time frame, and death certs up to about 1975. HIS PARENTS should fall into this, once we identify them correctly.
A 1929 birth leads to marriages in the 1950s or 1960s. I was unable to find his marriage to Dora or Jean (more than one Jean married to Smiths). James should be in both the 1930 and 1940 census with parents..but there are a number of them that are possible. IF YOU HAVE HIS BIRTH LOCATION/ COUNTY, WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO CONNECT THAT DOT.
When looking for a newspaper article concerning any crimes..the likelihood for that is only if he was convicted. Do you have any info to support this?
You have the authority to order his death certificate, which hopefully has the parent names. It isn't there online since it is after 1975.
Please, continue to work with us. You might want to post new questions with new info because it then goes to the top of the page (and we don't always have time to come back to a question). Be sure to include all the details of the original, instead of needing to come back to this.
Don't post names of living persons... but if you know the approx date of his marriage to Dora, that may help. Was she married before? the marriage would cross then with the married name, not Rojas. You also might include her birth/death dates, and we can follow that lead.
