If the account has been dormant (no activity) over a certain amount of time the bank will put it to sleep, so to speak. You'll need to contact the branch to get them to re-activate the account.

After ten years the bank closes the account and sends the money to the Bank of Canada, where they hold onto it for 30 years. If it's gone to the government you need to contact the right department, prove it's yours, and they'll send it to you. http://www.bankofcanada.ca/en/ucb/

Since it's been under 10 years the money should be where you left it, and depending on which bank it is, they'll make it hard or easy to get at it. I know my bank puts an account to sleep after 3 months of no activity.

If you contact the branch where you had the account they should let you know what to do to get your account active, or if it is still active. All the major banks have websites, you should be able to get your branch's contact info.
