Is it true that Germany borrowed money from American banks to help jump-start its econemy?

...and find the re-construction of the German military??
If so, what happened when the U.S entered the war and Germany still owed money to American banks?? Since they can't default on their debt without having their credit rating drop, causing other problems for Germany.

Under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany owed massive reparations to the Allied powers. There wasn't much of anyplace for them to borrow the money except banks in the US and Argentina. The Lausanne Conference of 1932 recognized that Germany couldn't continue its payments during the Great Depression, and that took off a lot of heat. Eventually, after WW II, Germany and its creditors came to a final agreement and payments.
