Is it safe to plant conifers onto the edge of a steep banking?

Id like to plant conifers that should reach around 10ft along the bottom of my garden which ends with a 20ft drop (fenced off) The reason is to dampen road traffic noise. I woul plant the conifers about 2-3 ft back from the drop. Question is, would this weaken the banking?. I don't want try garden to...

conifer roots grow like a old carpet so it will make the bank alot stronger and with soak any water up but just think carefully as if you ever want to take the up and remove roots to grow anything else you will have to take the bank out and rebuild also be warned if you have grass growing by it will suck all the water and the nutirents out the grass and this wil turn to moss and this is not a pretty sight it might not seem that bad but it is a nightmare to rectify good luck

Have you ever seen the mud slides in California after a fire has gone through? They were caused by the lack of trees. When a tree is on a slope it absorbs the moisture and it's roots hold back the soil. No trees and too much water and the soil slides away.

While yours is not on a hill the same principle applies. They will hold on to the soil and keep it from silding down the drop off. The only things you have to worry about is the shade cast in the garden and the rooits invading it. If your garden is close to where the trees will go you might consider dwarf specimens. They won't have as large a root system or cast as much shade. An 8 foot tall tree would help deaden the noise as well as a 20 foot tall one.

it will strengthen the ground because the conifers will soak up all the water from soil
