First Union National Bank has merged twice. It merged with Wachovia back around 2004. Wachovia has since merged with Wells Fargo. Their website says you can call them from Japan by dialing 0033-010-800-86935577.
And you probably had an account, past tense. If your account has gone 7 years with no customer activity (collecting interest doesn't count), the bank is required by law to pass the money over to the state's unclaimed funds. You would have to file with the state of New Jersey to get any money.
