Just a little anecdote on that..

5/3 bought out Old Kent in my part of the country.

When I was a teenager (oh so long ago;) I went to withdraw my entire savings account of $17.xx. The teller there told me that if I did that, I could NEVER open another account at O.K. (Ooops!) They have tried for 3 decades to get me back because of that faux pas.. LoL.. unsuccessfully. I only assume that they've updated policies and tellers by now.

Thanks for indulging me ;)

If you speak with someone, they may try to give you special offers/incentives to stay. Some banks will make it a royal pain to close accounts with them, but if you go down in person they'll probably help you out. I'm sorry that I'm not familiar with "fifth third bank" but I assume it has physical location(s)?

Go to the bank branch, teller window, and tell them you want to withdraw and close your account. They are obligated to comply.

Revised: If you still have checks 'outstanding', they'll let you know and deduct it from what's left. If there's not enough to cover, they may not be obligated or allowed to close your account til the outstanding is paid.

first, make sure you have met the minimum requirement (some banks require that you stay a client for like 6 months or one year and in exchange give you incentives for opening an account)

write them a letter asking to close account

OR

if your account does not incure service charges for inactivity, get your balance down to zero and just leave it dormant, you may wish to use it in the future

Just withdraw your money and tell them your closing your account.

just go there....fill out a withdrawal slip.....most have a " close account" box that you check....

then, just give it to the teller...
