I live in Beaufort SC we use 8ft surf rods with 3oz weights and you can do alot for bait. such as shrimp, cut fish, eel, all kinds of things
Huntington Beach State Park is amazing for all kinds of fishing. There are piers, bridges, surf, marsh even swamp areas to fish at. You do have to pay to get into the park but there are many free areas to park and enjoy the area for free. Do check on the fishing license information. I believe that you do need one. Huntington Beach is close to Surfside... just a few miles. Here is a link to more info on Huntington State Park.
