How do you fish a river from the bank?

Ok so i live in the dallas/fort worth area and would love to fish the trinity river. There is one spot i went to once before where there are no other anglers and it is close to my house, perfect. My only problem is last time i went i would cast my lure upstream and just let it follow the current. Half the time...

if theres current put on a nice sized weight that will keep the bait in place and cast it out there. now if you want to cover lots of water put on a float cast it out there with live bait and let it drift down river if it stops suddenly or gets jerked under your snagged or you have a fish.
