Houston, TX-area bank fishing? Alligator Gar?

Share |

Would anybody from the Houston area happen to have some areas for bank fishing? Specifically, I'm interested in knowing if any of the following local places are fishable (from land), and if so, what can you catch: Buffalo/White Oak/Other Bayous San Jacinto River Ship Channel Also...any good spots around...

Brays bayou had a few large ones last week along the bank at the bridge on Lawndale. You can fish along the bank as far as Mason park from Lawndale on either side. I seen a guy pull in between a 4 1/2" to 5 footer a few months back using live perch or bluegill or something like that under cork. When I was younger I used circle hooks and would catch them every time.

Buffalo and White Oak Bayous I don't think so what I have seen of them they are for the most part verry small and I don't know about the depth. When I say small I mean a 5 year old with a snoopy pole could cast across them and get hung in the grass on the other side. Of course I haven't seen all of them. The amount of run off they receive from the city running almost down town I don't know if I would want to fish in there. You might catch something that would scare you or It might even glow in the dark. We did have a Manity show up in Buffalo last year they captured it and shipped it back to Florida. I don't think they figgured out where it came from but figured Florida and it's own kind would be best for it. If you could see the Ship Channel you wouldn't ask and they are kinda picky about it after 9/11. On the San Jacinto there is some bank fishing mostly catfish but is an area near the dam at Lake Houston where you can catch some crappie and a few bass. I'm sure there is a gar fish or two in there. For gar fish I just don't know where you could get on a big gar now I did bow fish them when I was younger but all the places I went has been developed now and is all private. If you want to bank fish there are several fishing pears along Galveston Bay and even on the beach front in Galveston. There is a lot of bank fishing along the Texas City dike and a fishing peir at the end sometimes big reds and speckel trout. Just don't know where you could tackel one of our big brackis salt gars that run up to twelve feet.

I live in Humble, Texas near Lake Houston in the Atascocita area. First off where 59 enters Kingwood, it crosses San Jacinto, there is some good bank fishing but is unsafe bc of transits and rowdy teens. In the Huffman area you could go down 1960 and make a left on 2100 and from there turn on any road facing the lake. Huffman has a lot of alligator gars by the way and a lot of spots are vehicle friendly and the people are too. Also try BJ's Marina in Huffman, Its hard to find but the locals will help you. Next there is Beaumont 90 (aka Crosby Hwy), there is fishing spots galore here. And the best thing is near the highway the lake breaks up into little tributaries where big gar and catfish love to hide and spawn and most boats can't get to and disturb. There are a lot of spawning bass in that direction too, but watch out for gators and their nests. Good Luck!
