Hi,
Hatteras Island is a great place, especially if you like to have access to miles of beach without beach houses.
Our family has been going to the Outer Banks for a number of years and we would say that it's our favorite vacation spot.
In May the weather can be Warm, but it may feel cool while you are on the beach if the wind is blowing off the ocean. The ocean temperature is still pretty cool in May. But if you don't like crowds this is a nice month.
We usually stay in Duck or Corolla, but we did stay in Buxton once.

Let me give you a web site that may help you find some more information about the area and things to see and do.

I hope you have a great time at the Outer Banks.

We were there in early June a few years ago. The water was still pretty chilly when we were there, but it didn't keep us out of the water (although the rough surf almost did). We stayed in Southern Shores and went to the Wright Brothers Memorial, took a drive down to the Hatteras Lighthouse and Ocracoke, did a little bike riding, played putt-putt, and my wife and kids played on the dunes at Jockey's Ridge State Park while I took introductory hang gliding lessons there (not too many places where you can do that). It was our only family vacation to the Outer Banks (so far) and we loved it!

The weather, temperature wise, was very nice; mid 70s-low 80s. The water temperature however, is in the high 50s-low 60s. It was pretty cold. It's very nice there, lots of sightseeing to do! Check out Body lighthouse. You can't actually go up the lighthouse but it's worth the trip. It's only about 3 minutes off the main road. If you're looking for a beach to go to we always go to Coquina Beach. It has showers and pretty nice restrooms. And the beach is kept very clean. Depending on which direction you're coming from (we always come from north), right as you turn onto the main road, HWY 12 they have a little brown visitor building on the right you can stop off at and they have maps you can pick up and different brochures of places to go!
