From Columbus, OH, what is the best route to the Outer Banks that avoids Washington, D.C.?

It seems that D.C. traffic is horrendous at any time of any day.

Late at night DC should be OK but crowded. From Columbus take 33 to Lancaster and Athens and then pick up I-77 in WV. Take that to Charleston, WV and then I-64 through Beckly, WV and Charlottesville, VA.

When you get close to the Ohio line you will need to take several small roads to get to I-77. If you want to avoid that little jog you can take I-70 to I-77 but it is a lot longer. Don't be afraid of the minor highways in Ohio. Just have a good map and pay attention to what town you are in. It beats the heck out of DC traffic. The route I've suggested is 654 miles.
