If you want catfish and sometimes small stripers on the Delta we used to use clams, sold at the local Asian stores. For bass and large crappies I caught a few on spinnerbaits and some with whole nightcrawlers. The hot spots for bass are where the water drains out from the various irrigation ditches, but I always thought it would be a lot better for bass if I had a boat to get to the brushy areas.

Your rod is on the stubby side for sure! Go for steelhead and salmon! With that setup, I would toss something heavy to get extra distance, probably a #3 or 4 blue fox vibrax spinner with silver blade and flourescent pink body. Use 10 or 12lb test. Reel it as slow as you can without getting snagged, but keep the line tight enough to feel a strike. For deeper water with strong current, consider using a "pencil lead" or short piece of parachute cord with some buckshot sewn it it. Put a 3 way swivel 2ft up the line from your lure, and the third swivel is for 1 ft of line going down to the sinker You should be tapping bottom once in a while, but not too much or you have an expensive snag!

For panfish use your med action or find a cheap light action rod. Get a small bobber, some tiny jigs in bright colours and use small minnows or bits of worms. Once you find a panfish, you should be close to a big school of them so get that hook re-baited and back in the water before you lose their attention.

Good luck

all you need to do is use nightcrawlers for pretty much every thing and if you want to catch some nice catfish use shrimp (whole or half depending on size of shrimp) use a 1/2 oz weight about 10-15 inches above a size 4 or 2 hook and hook the shrimp through the middle and try tossing it out at least 15-20 feet or farther if you can. good luck.

If you are sure that there's catfish in your river, and you say you can't cast far, then get some chicken livers and some small treble hooks and cast just off of the bank. Catfish feed right next to the river banks. Depending on the current of your river, use enough weight to hold your bait down in one spot.
