I share your views. I read it back in eighties and recently recommended it for my local book group to re-read and what a difference those years have made. I agree that it read as depressing, the first time around, but I always cared about the character. This time around it was such a different read, I did not feel nearly so connected to it.

I read it many years ago, when I was still at school. I am an OAP now, and your question has made me think I must read it again. I thought it was depressing the first time around. How society has changed with regard to unmarried mothers from those days.

I read this book long long ago after seeing the excellent film version directed by Bryan Forbes; of course our perceptions change as we age and society's attitudes change; at the time it was published having black, lesbian and homosexual characters portayed in a realistic unsensational light as in this novel, was rare.

Marion,

I saw the Film many Years ago ,What they used to call a Kitchen sink drama ,I think I can remember Thora Hird was the Mother ,And was it Albert Finney in it not sure ,Yes it was a very depressing story ,But very much life in those days ,
