Banking, now that I'm 18..?

Okay, a couple questions because I've never really been taught about banking. 1. Now that I am 18, can I get my mom (custodian) removed from my account without her being there, or does she need to go to the bank with me? It's a pain that I can't access 75% of the online banking features because...

1 - Yes you should be able to do that. If the account is a joint account rather than your mom as custodian, then you would have difficulty. It just depends on how your mom set up the account originally. However you now have the ability to open a brand new account on your own if you want, so worst case scenario just drain your old minor account and deposit the funds into a brand new one (make sure there are no charges for this).

2 - If you do have to set up a new account you will not be able to keep your old account number. Don't worry about the direct deposit issue though, tell your banker that you want to transfer the direct deposit to your new account and they should take care of it for you.

Walk into Key bank, ask to speak to a banker, and they will answer all of your questions for you. That's their job.

Your mom signed the signature card when the account was opened, which makes her, and not you, the authorized signer. The bank probably won't let you remove her name or even withdraw whatever money is in the account without her being present. Even if she is present you probably won't be able to use the same account number, because the account will be coded in their system as a minor account. It really depends on your bank's policies and the way their system is set up.

Option 1. Open another account and every time you get paid take out everything over the min balance and put it in the new account

Option 2. Open another account and take out everything over the mini. balance. Don't worry about the direct deposit. It's not that difficult to change the deposit. Just give HR the new account and routing number (or a voided check).

Go into the bank with proof of age and they will switch the account for you. Make sure you fill out a new signature card and get a new account number
