Bank robbery - can anyone advise on how to undertake one on in modern times?

There's the sneaky method and the forceful method and the legal method. The sneaky method is to dig into the bank vault from below and then during some night to cut into it with a torch and empty it out before the next morning. OR to be REALLY sneaky, do it over several days. Burrow in from some place nearby that is discreet, and use a van to transport the dirt far away.

The forceful method is where you get a team and they do it the old fashioned way. This probably won't work in reality.

The legal method is where you take them over via the markets. Short them up the wazoo, buy far out of the money and soon to expire call options in their stock, then cover, buy as many shares as you can, and then exercise your options. It requires that you have billions of dollars already, though.

If you don't want to get caught you'll have to do it like a liquor store. A bank heist involving the vault is just too difficult to do these days with all the security features a bank has.

You gotta get in, put a gun in the teller's mouth, tell them to get as much money in your bag as possible and get the hell out. You aren't likely to get more than 5-6 grand.

Make sure you have a good escape route. Park your car a couple of streets over and run back to it thru some alleys or something.

You're better off robbing a jewelry store.

Nowadays it is near impossible to successfully rob a bank.
Banks today have high security that is very difficult to surpass.
Even if they are, banks have several defence systems inside the vaults to ensure that you either get caught or fail to retrieve the cash, such as dye packs ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dye_pack) which explode paint onto the stolen cash rendering the money worthless.

kidnap someone who works at the bank and hold their family hostage..get them to go into work - get the money and bring it to you in a dufflebag.
