Send a photocopy of your bank statement to Argos online showing details of the two transactions. You could go back to your bank. They should be able to take action to recover the money for you as the second transaction was not authorised by you and they shouldn't have paid it.

You can go to the Citizens Advice Bureau and find out about going to a small claims court if you don't get any joy from Argos or your bank.

First did both payments clear your account? Sometimes places will put a hold on the amount as well as the payment until the payment clears then the hold will drop off.
If so take your proof (statement and tranaction codes) to Argos and if they dont not want to help you go back to your bank and file a dispute/claim.

Put it in writing to the bank that you have only authorised this payment once, and yet the payment has been debited twice. Head it as a complaint, detailing as much information as you can, photocopy of your receipt if you have it.

I used to work in UK banking until recently, and we always refunded the customer (once we had it in writing that it was an unauthorised payment) and then took it up with the company concerned. Your bank are trying to get out of their responsibilities. This happens fairly regularly, and they should know what they should do. It should not be up to you to run around like piggy in the middle from one place to the next.

John O, he never said he had debt problems? I believe that it's the banks responsibility to monitor this. I've had the bank decline my card when the same amount has tried to be debited to my account at the same time. You have only authorised the bank to debit your account once which means they have no right to pay the supplier twice. I believe the bank should provide you with proof that you have authorised 2 payments. I don't think they'd be able to.

Go back into Argos with the documentary evidence that the charge has been taken out twice. refuse to budge until you get an assurance from the manager that youll get a refund. While you are there, if they get stroppy, talk in a loud voice to all who will listen (and those who wont) about how bad the service is, how they cant be trusted to be honest, how youll report them to Trading Standards. This worked for us in the computer game shop.

report the second transaction as fraud, and have the bank do all the dirty work, they will contact the store and investigate...and as long as you are telling the truth then you have nothing to worry about, and you will get your money back in a few days.
