I prefer canister floor lights for transitional lighting. Hide them behind a ficus or a large basket filled with pampas, and they cast wonderful shadows on the walls and ceiling. They are also out of the way, physically, as well as visually. They are also easy to move, and easy to maintain.

They cost about $15 apiece. If you use 40 watt florescent bulbs, they are also extremely cheap to use. I never turn mine off.
