Bank fishing 101: There are TONS of ponds and retention "lakes" that HAVE to be built when a new "development" goes up! Also, look for area's on interstate HWY's & in 6-8 Yr old Apt complex's. I was a bank fisherman for many years before I could afford my own boat,(although I did...

I have gone to a lumber yard that has a small pond that has "NO" fish in it and for being "NO" fish there I never catch 7 to 10 inch gills and 3 to 5 lb bass in it either, lol!
These little honey holes are super to fish in and the fish almost beg you to catch them too! I got to fish one a few years ago that was so starved and with super sized bass and gills that all I needed to do was toss grass clippings in the water and they got hit.So I asked to see if owner would let me put minnows in to feed the fish and he said go ahead but I dont think there are many in there. The first feeding was 5lbs of small fathead minnows that I dont think 1 made it to cover. After the feedings over a 6 week period the owner now says well I thank you but I dont allow anymore fishing at the pond,I asked if I did something wrong he just said no it is an insurance thing I said cool and thanks for the time I had!
A week or so later I drive by to see all these other ppl fishing the pond it is now family only, lol!

SO KEEP THEM A SECRET!

You are right on S_M_C! While fishing from a boat adds endless possibilities to the fishing game, most boaters you see are casting TOWARDS the shoreline!

My biggest bass ever was caught (and released)while bank fishing with a 3/4 oz spinnerbait slow-rolled along the bottom of a creek channel. A true trophy 16.2 lb Florida strain implanted into a small sized Texas impoundment that receives very little fishing pressure. That was in June 2001. If that fish is still alive it could be pretty big by now. I'd like to go catch her again!

you are right, like those little residential lakes, they have big bass in em. i saw a guy catch a ten pounder in one!

when i fish from the bank, sometimes i walk in the water, and before i cast i like to stand in the water for a min. or two because the fish get spooked when you walk in, and that gives them time to come back.

also, i wash my hands in the dirt/sand in the lake because it disguises your sent on your hands when handleing lures and what not and the fish dont smell you!

Nice tips. I honestly never would have thought that those small retention ponds carried fish.

*paris hilton voice* "That's Hot!"

(seriously...perfect way to escape crowds, brats, and jerks...and just fish)

I'm gunna try it out after work instead of hittin' the river for carp...lol
