My son wants to get a job in banking. Without any experience how can he go about this?

He's almost 20 and a college student taking general classes like English, etc. He's applied a few banks. But so far nothing. Anyone have any advice for him to get his foot in the door? What about morgage companies? Will they train?

Have try local credit unions also. With tight job market everybody is trying to get jobs anywhere. If you live in proximity of Washington, DC, Winchester, VA or Pensacola, FL email me I have a couple of leads on jobs the the credit union I retired from.

~~Most banks require at least cashiering experience. They also have testing requirements you must pass, as well as background checks.

Only smaller independent banks usually will be open to training. However, you have to remember in this economy jobs are being cut, hardly anyone is hiring. I think banks are being bombarded with out of work experienced tellers and the same for mortgage companies. Everyone is slow and there are many experienced people applying for any job openings.

My suggestions is to work for a retail or food place where he can handle cash, while he is in college. This will help him immensely when the job market begins to open up, as he will have cash handling experience.~~

He should go to his school counselor and talk to that person about what he wants to do with his life. The counselor will be able to assist him in setting up the right schedule of classes and declaring a major (if it's not too late). When it comes down to it, I'd say that's the best way to go about it. He's also going to have to be willing to work and take more specific and challenging classes that will help prepare him for the field. A Master's degree couldn't hurt either. Good luck to both of you.

No company will train your son for work (not at this moment). You might ask your son to contact his school career center. they might have internship or co-op at financial services. my company (I-bank) has always hire co-op through those system. You can ask your son to try.

Hope this help.
